Structure and Composition
- Steel wire: Mostly made of carbon steel or alloy steel, produced by cold drawing or cold rolling, with circular or special-shaped cross-sections. Special-shaped cross-section steel wires are mainly used in the production of sealed steel wire ropes.
- Core: Its main function is to support the steel wire rope and stabilize the cross-sectional structure. It is divided into steel cores and fiber cores, with fiber cores including natural fiber cores and synthetic fiber cores.
- Grease: Sprayed during the stranding process of the steel wire rope, it can reduce wear on the surface of the steel wire and isolate the surface of the steel wire from oxygen in the air to inhibit oxidative corrosion.
Classification
- By material of rope-making steel wire: Carbon steel wire ropes, stainless steel wire ropes, etc.
Carbon steel wire ropes
Stainless steel wire ropes
- By surface state: Phosphating coated steel wire ropes, galvanized steel wire ropes, plastic-coated steel wire ropes, bright steel wire ropes, etc.
- By stranding method: Right lang lay, left lang lay, right regular lay, left regular lay, right mixed lay, left mixed lay, etc.
- By contact state between adjacent layers of steel wires in the strand: Point contact steel wire ropes, line contact steel wire ropes, compacted steel wire ropes, sealed steel wire ropes, etc.
Characteristics
- High strength: Can bear large pulling force and heavy loads, and can transmit loads over long distances.
- Light weight: Easy to carry and transport, widely used in material handling machinery.
- Stable operation: Not prone to vibration and jumping during operation, able to bear various loads and variable loads.
- Not easy to break suddenly as a whole: Even if individual steel wires break, other steel wires can still continue to bear the load, ensuring reliable operation.
- Good toughness: Has certain elasticity and flexibility, can be bent and used under different angles and working conditions, adapting to complex working environments.
- Wear resistance: The specially treated surface of the steel wire can resist certain wear, prolonging the service life, especially in scenes with frequent friction.
With its characteristics of high strength and reliability, steel wire ropes are widely used in many fields:
- Lifting and transportation: Used in equipment such as cranes, elevators, and tower cranes to realize the lifting, lowering, and horizontal movement of heavy objects. For example, loading and unloading of port goods, hoisting of building materials at construction sites, etc.
- Bridge construction: An important load-bearing material for bridge structures such as suspension bridges and cable-stayed bridges, bearing the weight of the bridge and loads such as vehicles.
- Petroleum drilling: Used to lift drill bits and downhole equipment during petroleum drilling, adapting to harsh environments of high temperature and high pressure.
- Aerospace: Applied in flight control systems, traction devices, etc., with extremely high requirements on the performance and quality of steel wire ropes.
- Transportation: The traction system of elevators relies on steel wire ropes to pull the car up and down; the operation of cable cars and ropeways is also realized through the traction and load-bearing of steel wire ropes.
- Industrial manufacturing: In industries such as metallurgy and machinery manufacturing, it is used for traction and tensioning of equipment, such as the traction device of rolling mills and the tensioning mechanism of conveyor belts.
- Special fields: Used in the transmission of flight control components in aerospace; in marine engineering, as fixed cables for drilling platforms and traction ropes for salvage operations, etc.
