Wire Rope Sockets: Types, Installation and Safety Guide 2026/07/24 18:15:14

A wire rope socket is a heavy-duty wire rope termination used to connect steel wire rope to shackles, hooks, pins, lugs, cranes, hoists and structural tensioning systems. The three main types are open spelter sockets, closed spelter sockets and wedge sockets. Each type has a different structure, installation method, load efficiency and suitable application. This guide explains their main differences, installation procedures, safety precautions and rejection criteria.

1. Three Main Types

(1) Open Socket (Open Spelter Socket / Open Cast Socket)

 Open Spelter Socket

- Structure: Open fork-type or clevis end, normally connected by a clevis pin to a shackle, hook, lug or other lifting component.

- Manufacturing: The wire rope end is opened into a broom shape and secured inside the tapered socket basket using molten zinc or an approved thermoset resin socketing compound.

- Feature: High termination efficiency, stable performance under long-term heavy loads and suitable for permanent wire rope connections. Marine certification may be supplied when required, depending on the product design and certification scope.

- Application: Ship and offshore rigging, bridge stay cables, heavy mining hoists, cranes and permanent lifting or tensioning systems.

(2) Closed Socket (Closed Spelter Socket / Closed Cast Socket)

 Closed Spelter Socket (2)

- Structure: Solid round eye integrated with the tapered socket body. It can be connected to a pin, bolt, shackle or compatible attachment point.

- Manufacturing: The wire rope is secured inside the tapered basket using the same zinc-pouring or approved resin-socketing process as an open spelter socket.

- Feature: Smooth rounded eye with no side opening, reduced localized wear on connecting pins and good fatigue resistance in fixed installations.

- Application: Elevator and hoist ropes, curtain wall cables, structural tension cables, fixed rigging systems and overhead lifting assemblies.

(3) Wedge Socket

 Wedge Socket

- Structure: Split steel socket body with a removable wedge block. No molten zinc or resin pouring is required.

- Feature: Quick on-site installation, fully detachable and reusable when the socket, wedge and wire rope remain within the permitted inspection limits.

- Limitation: The wedge must be fully seated during the initial loading process and inspected regularly. Conventional wedge sockets may be less suitable for permanent high-vibration applications unless specifically approved by the manufacturer.

- Application: Cranes, winches, guy wires, construction equipment, temporary rigging and wire rope systems that require regular adjustment or replacement.

2. Standard Usage Instructions

Open & Closed Cast Sockets (Poured Alloy Type)

1. Unravel wire rope strands completely, remove all grease, dirt and rust, dry thoroughly.

2. Preheat the socket cone evenly to avoid rapid cooling alloy segregation.

3. Melt white metal evenly and pour slowly into the cone gap; do not pour too fast.

4. Cool naturally without water quenching.

5. Conduct pull test after cooling; stamp size, WLL and brand logo on outer surface.

6. For installation: Insert clevis pin through open fork / closed eye and lock with cotter pin.

Wedge Socket Installation Steps

1. Thread wire rope through the large inlet of the socket body.

2. Fold rope tail to wrap around the wedge block, insert wedge into the cone cavity.

3. Pull the main wire rope hard to self-lock the wedge tightly.

4. Reserve rope tail length ≥ 3 times wire rope diameter to prevent slipping out.

5. Apply preload 2–3 times, retighten tension to eliminate internal clearance before formal use.

3. Important Wire Rope Socket Safety Precautions

Matching Specification

Socket size must fully match wire rope diameter. Mismatch will cause wire sliding or strand breakage.

Hot-dip galvanized finish for coastal, humid and corrosive environments.

Load Safety Rules

- Lifting application safety factor ≥5~6; static tension cable safety factor ≥3.

- Strictly prohibit overload, sharp impact load and emergency braking.

- Cast sockets carry higher rated load than wedge sockets for the same wire diameter.

Installation Forbidden Operations

1. Grease and residual dirt on wire strands greatly reduce holding force; full cleaning is mandatory.

2. Do not bend, crush or damage steel strands during pouring or assembly; discard damaged ropes.

3. Wedge sockets shall be inspected and retightened regularly under vibration working conditions.

4. Never cut the wire tail too short to avoid pull-out failure.

Scrap Standard – Stop Use Immediately If:

1. Socket body has cracks, deformation, severe corrosion or peeling galvanized layer.

2. Alloy inside cast socket loosens, falls off or has obvious sliding marks of wire strands.

3. Wedge block wears severely, slips or cannot lock tightly.

4. Stamped logo, size and WLL markings are blurred and unrecognizable.

Environmental Limits

1. Long-term high vibration scenarios prioritize open/closed cast sockets over wedge sockets.

2. Outdoor and marine rigging requires annual load re-inspection.

3. Avoid direct friction between socket eye/fork and sharp metal edges; add protective sleeves.

4. How to Select the Correct Wire Rope Socket

When ordering a wire rope socket, provide the following information:

1. Wire rope diameter

2. Wire rope construction, such as 6×19, 6×37 or rotation-resistant rope

3. Fiber core or independent wire rope core

4. Wire rope grade and minimum breaking strength

5. Open spelter, closed spelter or wedge socket type

6. Required pin diameter and connection dimensions

7. Surface finish, such as self-colored or hot-dip galvanized

8. Applicable standard, inspection or certification requirement

9. Working environment and intended application

10. Required quantity
